Our Programs

"i am financial knowledge" levels I & II

The "I am financial knowledge." curriculum was developed by YouthEntity Founder Kirsten McDaniel and emphasizes personal money management.  The program teaches students about:

  • Planning and money management
  • Credit and debt
  • Risk management and insurance
  • Saving and investing, using the 10-10-10-70 principle
  • Financial responsibility and decision making
  • Income and careers

Learning is not limited to the classroom!  Every student receives a workbook that allows students to keep notes and complete exercises so that they can share the knowledge they learn with their families.  Every student completes a final test where they are paid $.50 for each question they answer correctly, up to$15 each. Students take home a physical paycheck from YouthEntity along with a parent letter with information about the program and how to deposit the check.  If students choose to open a special YouthEntity Alpine Bank student account at any Alpine Bank branch, they may earn an extra 1% interest in their savings up to balances of $1,000.

Participation is easy for teachers.  YouthEntity Program Managers work with your 5th or 8th grade teacher teams to determine the best dates to offer the workshop and bring in a team of trained facilitators to teach the program.  This program is completely free of charge to all students and teachers.  YouthEntity offers a final field trip for students and teachers who may come to the YouthEntity center in Carbondale to take part in interactive workshops, take a tour of a bank and complete their final test.

BRING "I am financial knowledge to your classroom today!

If your 5th or 8th grade teacher team is interested in participating, please contact Paul Hilts, "I am financial knowledge." Program Manager, YouthEntity, by e-mail at paul@youthentity.org or call our office line at (970) 963-4055.

banking on your future

Together with Alpine Bank, YouthEntity sponsors "Banking on Your Future" workshops for high school students building upon our "I am financial knowledge." programs for 5th and 8th graders.

The Banking On Your Future program uses a curriculum powered by EverFi, a new-media learning platform that uses the latest technology – video, animations, 3-D gaming, avatars, and social networking – to bring complex financial concepts to life for today’s digital generation.  The program teaches students 10 modules about:

  • Savings
  • Banking
  • Payment types, interest rates and credit cards
  • Credit scores
  • Financing higher education, including FAFSA forms
  • Renting vs. owning
  • Insurance and taxes
  • Consumer fraud
  • Investing

The program tracks individual student progress and knowledge gain and provides students who successfully complete the course with certification in financial literacy, which can be a powerful tool for a job application, college search and internships.

Every student who completes the course also takes a final test provided by YouthEntity for the chance to earn $.50 for every correct answer, up to $17.50 each.  YouthEntity mails participating teachers the final tests and answer sheets and then processes and sends checks to students.  Alternatively, you can download the exam booklet and answer sheet below.

“I liked learning about all of the things you taught us. My mom isn’t the best at managing money, but I told her about some of the things you taught us and she thought it made sense. Especially the 10-10-10-70 principal.”
— Teddy, 5th grader

prostart

This program is primarily for juniors and seniors who want to learn about both the culinary and the management sides of the industry. Each year we compete in culinary arts and business management competitions regionally, statewide and even nationally for the experience and potential scholarship monies for students. In 2013 - 2015, our students have amassed over $450,000 in scholarship opportunities for post secondary education in this industry. We have placed 1st in both the business management and culinary arts competitions at the Colorado ProStart State Invitational and in 2015, we placed 1st overall bringing home the Sysco Cup.  In 2015 we were selected by Sullivan University as one of the Top 50 hospitality programs for high school students in the country. Click on the video below in order to take a look back at ProStart at YouthEntity in 2015 - and what a year it was!

This is a program for freshman through seniors who have an interest in the world of a pasty chef or who want to grow their knowledge in this area.  During this hands on program, students work with a master pastry chef to make French pastries with an American sensibility. Their final exam is to produce and cater a 1,000 piece pastry and chocolate buffet for their families, friends and YouthEntity donors.

Graduates from both of our programs have completed college and are working in industry or are currently enrolled in institutions such as the Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts, Mesa State University, Johnson & Wales University, Modul University Vienna and Colorado Mountain College.
